Do heat pumps and mechanical ventilation increase electricity consumption ?
Yes, these systems require electricity to work, be it to transport and store the heat, or to extract stale air from humid rooms. But you need to compare this electricity consumption with the savings made on your heating bill. And do not forget that if your building has solar panels, then the used electricity will be practically free.
How does mechanical ventilation work ?
In both cases, mechanical ventilation is a process by which stale air is pumped out of humid rooms (bathroom, kitchen). This generates is a low pressure which draws in the air from the other rooms, and in turn this attracts fresh air from outside.
In the case of double flux mechanical ventilation, the system communicates the heat from the extracted air to the entering fresh air, enabling heat conservation. During the summer you can activate a bypass system to allow cooler air inside at night.
Why is it so important to remove humid air ?
The air inside must maintain an average humidity level (not too wet, not too dry). Every time we use our premises, we produce humidity (when we sweat, bring home rain-soaked clothes, use the kitchen or bathroom, drink coffee).
Humid air warms up slowly compared to dry air, and therefore requires more heating energy to attain a comfortable temperature. Worse, wet air also stimulates the growth of mold on your walls. An efficient ventilation is key to maintaining a healthy level of humidity inside your house, office or shop.
