What is the advantage of converting the attic under a sloping roof ?
The attic can be used in many different ways. However, one of the most interesting aspects is the possibility to install natural light wells : every roof window (such as Velux) can direct the daylight toward the center of the room. This can be very useful to bring light on a large work table, for example.
Of course, there are many solutions to block or modulate this light, such as mechanical blinds (with manual or remote control). Ask us for advice, we will gladly assist you.
How is the precise available attic space measured ?
The usable attic space can be measured according to two different use cases :
- The active use : we will measure the "standing" space, in other words the space where the roof is at least 180cm high, allowing an average adult to stand under it. Of course, you may want to factor in even taller people.
- The passive use : we can include space where the roof is lower than 180cm and which will be used for storage, or perhaps for a bed.

Does roof insulation reduce the available attic space ?
We suggest the sarking insulation method. The insulating material is placed between the wooden frame and the roof coating, and will not impact the available volume. However, this method requires the removing of the roof coating in order to place the insulating layer on the balks. We can suggest you to use this method along with an overhaul of the roof coating, in order to optimize your budget. This also represents a good opportunity to modify the roof structure by adding new windows and create natural light wells for your future attic room.
Do I need to declare the new attic room to the local administration ?
Yes, every modification of a habitable space must be declared to the administration of your municipality, and the works require a permit. Our attic conversion company will provide you with all the necessary information.
